How it works

What micro piles is and when it's the right call.

Micro piles work on a straightforward structural principle. A footing that has settled has lost reliable support in the soil beneath it, so the fix is to carry the load down to soil or rock that can hold it. A micro pile reaches past the weak upper layer, and because it is small in diameter it can be installed with compact drilling equipment in spaces a larger rig cannot reach. The crew drills a small-diameter hole at each pile location along the affected foundation, advancing past the unstable surface soil to firmer, load-bearing soil or rock. A steel element, typically a casing or a high-strength threaded bar, is set into the hole, and the hole is filled with grout. The grout bonds the steel pile to the surrounding ground, so the pile develops its support both from end bearing on the firm layer below and from friction along the grouted bond zone. That dual mechanism is part of why micro piles adapt well to variable Carolina soil profiles, where a single clean bearing layer is not always present. Once the grout has cured and the pile has developed capacity, a steel bracket connects the pile to the foundation footing, and the weight of the structure is transferred from the failing soil onto the pile and the stable ground it bears on. With the piles in place and the load transferred, the foundation is stabilized against further settlement. Where the structure and conditions allow, the piles can support an effort to lift the foundation back toward its original elevation, which often helps close settlement cracks and bring doors and windows back into alignment. How much lift is realistic depends on the specific structure and soil, which is one reason diagnosis comes first. Micro piles address the structural support beneath the foundation. They do not change drainage or grading at the surface, so where water management is part of the problem we address that as a separate part of the recommendation.

Installation Process

How we install micro piles.

Step 01

No-pressure inspection and diagnosis

We start by evaluating the foundation and, just as importantly, why it has moved. We measure the amount and direction of settlement, look for related signs inside the home such as stair-step cracks or sticking doors, and assess both the soil and the access at each affected area. In Piedmont clay that swells and shrinks, on an Asheville slope, or in Sandhills sand, the cause shapes the recommendation, and we will tell you plainly if micro piles are not the right fit for your home.

Step 02

Confirm the system and engineer the plan

Micro piles are often the right tool where access is restricted or the soil profile is variable, but in some cases a different pier system fits better. We confirm whether micro piles suit your structure and soil, then determine where the piles go, how they will be spaced, the load each must carry, and roughly how deep we expect to drill. We walk you through the plan so you understand the scope before any work begins.

Step 03

Set up compact equipment and prepare access

Because micro piles use small-diameter drilling rigs, we can position equipment in tight side yards, low-clearance crawl spaces, or interior locations where a full-size pier rig will not fit. Our crew prepares each pile location along the affected section of foundation and exposes the footing where the bracket will attach, keeping disruption to your home and yard as limited as the job allows.

Step 04

Drill and install the grouted piles

At each location the crew drills a small-diameter hole past the weak upper soil to firm, load-bearing soil or rock. A steel casing or threaded bar is set into the hole and the hole is filled with grout, bonding the pile to the surrounding ground. Each pile is designed to develop capacity through both end bearing and the grouted bond along the shaft, which is what lets micro piles perform in variable soil profiles.

Step 05

Attach brackets and transfer the load

Once the grout has cured and the piles have developed capacity, steel brackets connect each pile to the foundation footing. The weight of the structure is then transferred from the unstable soil onto the piles and the firm ground below, stabilizing the foundation against further settlement. Where the structure and conditions allow, we work toward lifting the foundation back toward its original position in controlled increments.

Step 06

Backfill, restore, and review

With the piles in place and the load transferred, we backfill the access areas and restore the work site. We review the finished result with you and go over any drainage or grading recommendations that help protect the repair, so you understand how the system supports your home going forward.

"The reason we reach for micro piles is access and soil. When a full-size rig can't get to the foundation, or the ground is too variable to count on one clean bearing layer, a grouted micro pile lets us still reach soil that will hold the house for good. And if it isn't the right system for your foundation, we'll tell you that straight, with no pressure and no upsell."

Micro piles are often the better tool in two situations. The first is restricted access, since the small-diameter drilling rigs fit into tight side yards, low-clearance crawl spaces, and interior basement repairs where a full-size pier rig cannot reach. The second is a variable or weak soil profile, because a micro pile develops support both from bearing on the firm layer below and from the grouted bond along its shaft, which adapts well to Carolina soils that lack one clean bearing layer. Push piers and helical piers remain excellent systems in many cases. During your inspection we explain which system fits your home and why, rather than defaulting to one.
