What concrete patching is and when it's the right call.
Concrete patching works by bonding a repair material into a damaged area so it becomes part of the slab and carries normal foot and vehicle traffic again. The first and most important step is diagnosis. A crack or a spalled patch is a symptom, and patching the symptom only makes sense once the surrounding slab is stable and supported. If the concrete is still settling because of what the soil is doing underneath it, a fresh patch will simply crack again, so we determine whether the slab needs to be leveled or supported before any patching is done. When patching is appropriate, the crew prepares the damaged area first, because preparation is what makes a patch last. Loose, crumbling, or spalled concrete is removed back to sound material, and the area is cleaned of dust and debris so the new material can bond to a solid surface rather than to a weak layer. A patching compound suited to the slab and its exposure is then applied, worked into the prepared area, and finished flush with the surrounding concrete. The repair is allowed to cure before the surface returns to normal use. What patching does is restore the surface: it closes cracks and holes, rebuilds spalled areas, removes tripping edges, and improves how the concrete looks and performs. What patching does not do, on its own, is change the deeper soil behavior, drainage conditions, or settlement that may have damaged the concrete in the first place. That is why diagnosis comes first. In active Piedmont clay that keeps swelling and shrinking, or where water keeps washing out the subgrade, we may recommend leveling or supporting the slab, correcting drainage, or in some cases replacing badly deteriorated concrete, so the repaired surface holds up over time rather than failing again.
How we install concrete patching.
No-pressure inspection and diagnosis
We start by evaluating the damage and, just as importantly, why it happened. We look at the cracks, chips, and spalled areas, check whether the slab has settled or is still moving, and assess the soil and drainage around it. In Piedmont clay, Sandhills sand, SC Upstate foothill clay, or saturated coastal soils, the cause shapes the recommendation, and we will tell you plainly if patching alone is not the right fit for your slab.
Confirm the slab is stable and explain the plan
Patching only lasts on a slab that is supported and sitting where it should. If the concrete needs to be leveled or supported first, we say so before any patching is done. Once we confirm the slab is a good candidate, we walk you through what the repair will involve and explain any drainage, soil, or leveling work we would recommend alongside it, so you have a clear picture before any work begins.
Prepare and clean the damaged area
Our crew removes loose, crumbling, and spalled concrete back to sound material and cleans the area of dust and debris. This preparation is what allows the patching material to bond to solid concrete rather than to a weak surface layer, and it is the difference between a patch that holds and one that lifts.
Apply and finish the patch
A patching compound suited to the slab and its exposure is worked into the prepared area, filling the cracks, holes, or spalled spots, and finished flush with the surrounding concrete. The crew shapes the repair so the surface is even and the tripping edges are gone, and so the patched area blends as closely as practical with the existing concrete.
Cure, clean up, and review
The repair is allowed to cure before the surface returns to normal use, and we let you know what to expect for your specific project. We clean the work area and review the finished result with you, and we go over any drainage, grading, or leveling recommendations that help protect the repair so you understand how to keep the concrete sound going forward.
"Patching the surface is straightforward. The part we take pride in is figuring out why the concrete broke down in the first place, because in our Carolina clay and freeze-thaw winters that's what decides whether the repair lasts. If the slab needs leveling or support before we patch it, we'll tell you. No pressure, no upsell."
