Sump Pump Installation Across the Carolinas

A sump pump is the part of a dry basement that does the work. When water collects in the pit, it switches on, lifts the water out and sends it away from the house, and we size it and route the discharge for the water your basement actually sees. Looking for a reliable basement waterproofing contractor? You're in the right place. Read on to learn more.

A sump pump is the part of a basement drainage system that removes the water. While drainage collects water and routes it to a low point, the pump is what actually removes that water and sends it away from the home.

What Does Your Basement Need From a Sump Pump?

A sump pump sits in a pit at a low point of the basement floor and removes water that a drainage system collects. A float switch turns it on as the water rises and off once the pit is empty, and a discharge line carries the water away from the foundation. It works as part of an interior drainage system, and because it runs on household power, many homes pair it with a backup pump.

Puddles at the base of the walls and nowhere for water to goWater Collecting With No Sump

When water enters and there is no pit or pump, a sump is usually installed together with an interior drain that delivers water to it. A pump on its own has no way to collect water from the walls.

A pump that cycles constantly or a pit that overflows in stormsA Pump That Runs Often or Falls Behind

A pump that cannot keep up may be undersized for the water it handles, may have a failing switch, or may be sending water out too close to the house so it comes back. The inspection checks each of these.

A pump that hums, rattles or has not been tested in yearsAn Older Pump With No Backup

An older pump can stop without warning, and a power outage stops any pump that runs on household power. Replacing an aging pump and adding a backup are often planned together.

CH 01

What Does a Sump Pump Do?

A sump pump removes water that collects below the level of the basement floor. An interior drain around the walls carries water to a pit, called the sump pit, set into the floor at a low point. When the water in the pit rises, a float switch turns the pump on, and the pump pushes the water up through a pipe and out of the house. When the pit is empty, the pump turns off.

HydroHelp911 Crawl Space & Foundation Repair installing a new sump pump as part of a basement interior drainage system.

Most basements sit below the level where water could drain out on its own, so the pump is what actually moves the water out. It works day and night without anyone switching it on, which is why it is the center of an interior basement waterproofing system.

CH 02

What Are the Parts of a Sump Pump System?

A complete system has more than the pump. The sump pit is a basin set into the floor that the drain empties into, usually with a lid that keeps debris out. The float switch rises with the water and starts the pump. The discharge line carries water from the pump up and out through the wall, and a check valve in that line keeps pumped water from falling back into the pit.

Outside, the discharge should empty far enough from the foundation that the water does not soak back toward the walls. Each part matters: a stuck float, a clogged line or a discharge that empties next to the house can leave a working pump unable to keep the basement dry.

CH 03

Submersible or Pedestal Sump Pump: What Is the Difference?

The two common types differ in where the motor sits. A submersible pump sits inside the pit, under the water, with a sealed motor. It is quieter, and the pit can be covered. A pedestal pump sets its motor on a column above the pit, out of the water, and is easier to reach for service but louder and harder to cover.

HydroHelp911 Crawl Space & Foundation Repair installing a new sump pump and discharge pipe in a basement.

Which type fits depends on the size of the pit, how much water it handles and where it sits in the basement. We match the pump to the basement during the inspection.

CH 04

Why Does Sump Pump Sizing Matter in the Carolinas?

A pump has to keep up with water at its peak, which is during and after the heaviest rain. In Piedmont clay around Charlotte and Greensboro, saturated soil can send water toward the foundation for days after a storm. Near the coast around Wilmington and Brunswick County, a high water table can feed the pit between storms as well, so the pump may run often.

An undersized pump can fall behind in those conditions, and one that runs constantly wears out sooner. We size the pump for the water we expect it to handle and route the discharge so the water does not return to the foundation.

What Are the Signs a Sump Pump Is Failing?

Common signs include a pump that runs without stopping, one that turns on and off in quick bursts, grinding or rattling noises, visible rust, water standing in the pit that the pump does not clear, and a musty smell in the basement that keeps coming back. A pump that has not run in a long time may also fail to start when it is needed.

HydroHelp911 Crawl Space & Foundation Repair inspecting pooled water and wet walls in a basement.

Testing a pump is simple: pour water into the pit until the float rises and watch whether the pump starts, empties the pit and stops. If it does not, or if you are not sure how old it is, we can check it during an inspection.

CH 06

What Happens If the Power Goes Out?

A standard sump pump runs on household power, so an outage stops it, and outages often come with the same storms that bring the most water. A backup pump in the same pit can take over when that happens, running on a battery or on household water pressure.

For a finished basement, or a home that sees water often, a backup is worth discussing during the inspection. We explain how each type works so you can decide what fits your home.

CH 07

What Warranty Comes With a Sump Pump?

A sump pump carries a 3 year warranty on parts only, and lifetime coverage on parts and labor is available only through enrollment in, and ongoing participation in, our annual maintenance program at the owner's expense ($250 a year).

Coverage begins once the final invoice is paid in full, and it does not cover acts of nature, power outages, GFCI tripping or breaker trips. The full terms are on our sump pump warranty page.

Which Solution Is Right?

Which Sump Setup Fits Your Basement?

MethodFits whenNot a fit when
Sump Pump With Interior DrainageWater enters along the walls and needs to be collected and removed. The basement is damp from humidity alone, with no water collecting.
Replacement Primary PumpAn existing pit and drain work but the pump is worn, noisy or undersized.Water still collects in places the existing drain does not reach.
Backup PumpThe basement depends on one pump and a power outage or pump failure would leave it unprotected. There is no working primary pump and drain for the backup to support.

A table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Which method fits your home is confirmed during your free inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Sump Pump Installation

Don't see your question here? Call or fill out our quick online form, and our team will help.

Water from the perimeter drain flows into a sump pit at a low point of the basement. As the water rises, a float switch turns the pump on, and the pump lifts the water out through a discharge line that carries it away from the foundation. Once the pit is empty the pump shuts off, and it works on its own day or night.

Pricing & Scope

How Is Your Repair Priced?

Every home is different, so every estimate is written for the home in front of us. A free inspection at your home gives you a written estimate at no cost, based on your scope, access, and conditions.

How Pricing Works

A sump pump is installed as part of an interior basement waterproofing system, not sold on its own, so it is priced with that system. Pricing depends on the volume of water the pump has to handle, the pit and discharge setup, whether a backup pump is added, and access. You receive a written estimate after a free inspection.

When Is This Not the Right Fix?

A sump pump is not a fix for humid air with no standing water, and a pump alone cannot do its job without drainage feeding the pit.

What Does the Free Inspection Include?

Your inspector explains every finding in plain language, and you get written documentation at no cost, typically an estimate with photographs.

The Process

How We Approach Sump Pump Installation

Four steps, from your free inspection to the finished repair.

Step 01

Inspect the Basement and Any Existing Pit

We look at where water collects, how it reaches the floor, and the condition of any pump, pit and discharge already in place.

Step 02

Set the Pit and Connect the Drain

A sump pit is set at a low point of the floor and connected to the interior drain that will feed it.

Step 03

Install the Pump and Discharge

The pump, float switch, check valve and discharge line are installed, with the outlet routed away from the foundation.

Step 04

Test and Review Maintenance

We fill the pit to test the full cycle, then go over the warranty terms and the annual maintenance program.
