What Soil Is Lexington Built On?

Blaney and Georgeville are the most common soils in the USDA sample inside Lexington. Of the five points the USDA sampled inside Lexington, two are Blaney, two are Georgeville and one is Barnwell. Countywide, the most common soil in Lexington County is Lakeland, on more than a quarter of the land, with Blaney, Vaucluse and Fuquay behind it. The USDA rates the sample inside Lexington low for swelling and shrinking.

Blaney is a deep soil that formed from old marine and river deposits of the Coastal Plain, usually found on Coastal Plain terraces. It is sandy for about the top two feet, and under that is light brown sandy clay loam. Loam is soil with a mix of sand, silt and clay. It drains well, and the USDA rates it low for swelling and shrinking, which means it changes size very little as it gets wet and dries out.

Georgeville is a deep soil that formed in place as the slate and other fine rock of the Carolina Slate Belt beneath it weathered, usually found on ridges and hillsides. Its top layer is silt loam, and under that is red clay. It drains well, and the USDA rates it low for swelling and shrinking, which means it changes size very little as it gets wet and dries out.

Highly recommend JJ Evans from Hydro Help 911. He did an assessment and evaluation of water/foundation issues for us. He was thorough, looked for root causes, and made sure what issues were effecting the property as a whole. (Not just at the obvious problem sites.). JJ is very knowledgeable and professional. He also explains causes/effects in layman’s terms, offering the science behind the issue if/when appropriate.
