Concrete Leveling in Wilmington
Why Does Concrete Settle in Wilmington?
On the coast, slabs often settle as sandy soil washes out from beneath them, leaving a void under the concrete. The free inspection looks for that void and its cause before we lift a sidewalk, patio, pool deck or garage floor with polyurethane foam. Concrete lifting and leveling became part of our Wilmington office's work in July 2026.

How Does Wilmington Soil Affect Concrete Slabs?
The most common soil in the USDA sample inside Wilmington is Seagate, a deep sandy soil over light gray clay loam. The USDA sampled five points inside Wilmington: two are Seagate, one is Leon, one is Baymeade and one is Lynn Haven. The wider county survey for New Hanover County leads with Murville, at more than a tenth of the land, then Leon, Kureb and Bohicket. The USDA rates the sample inside Wilmington low for swelling and shrinking.
Seagate is a deep soil that formed from old marine deposits of the Coastal Plain, usually found on Coastal Plain terraces. It is sandy for about the top three feet, and under that is light gray clay loam. Loam is soil with a mix of sand, silt and clay. It drains somewhat slowly, and it can stay wet near the surface for part of the year. The USDA rates it low for swelling and shrinking, which means it changes size very little as it gets wet and dries out.
Leon is a deep soil that formed from old marine deposits of the Coastal Plain, usually found on low, flat ground. It is sand from the top layer down. It drains poorly to very poorly, and it can hold water at or near the surface for much of the year.
What It Means for Your Home
- What works in your favorSeagate changes size very little as it wets and dries, so it is unlikely to push a slab up as the seasons change.
- What to watchGround that stays wet can be soft under a slab, and slabs on soft ground can settle unevenly, most often at the edges and joints. Water running under a slab can also wash sand out from beneath it and leave a hollow. Near the coast, a high water table and saturated ground add to it.
- Signs you might noticeLook for a cracked garage floor, broken or sunken sidewalks, and a cracked driveway.
- How we address itWe raise settled slabs with polyurethane foam injection and fill hollows under them with concrete void filling, on sidewalks, patios and garage floors.
Soil survey: USDA NRCS Soil Data Access (SSURGO), sdmdataaccess.nrcs.usda.gov. Inside Wilmington, the survey maps Seagate, Leon and Baymeade series. USDA rates the soil low for swelling and shrinking (weighted linear extensibility 2.7 percent). Across New Hanover County, it maps Murville, Leon, Kureb and Bohicket series. Series descriptions: USDA NRCS Official Series Descriptions for Seagate and Leon.
Our approach
How Do We Approach Concrete Leveling in Wilmington?
A sunken concrete slab usually means the soil holding it up gave way. Concrete leveling lifts a settled slab back to its original elevation by filling the empty space underneath it and supporting it again from below, usually with polyurethane foam leveling.
It is far less disruptive than tearing out and repouring concrete. We drill small ports, pump material under controlled pressure until the slab rises evenly back to grade, and patch the ports when we are done. In most cases the surface is ready to use again soon after the work.
Compared to replacement, lifting keeps your existing concrete and avoids the color and texture mismatch of a fresh pour against old.
We level sidewalks, patios and porches, garage floors, pool decks, interior slabs, and concrete steps and stairs, and we start every job with a free inspection that finds the root cause before we recommend anything. Lifting is the right call when the slab is structurally sound and simply sitting too low.
It is not the right call when the concrete is broken into pieces or when a structural footing is the real issue. If that is what we find, we will tell you, and we will point you toward the repair that actually fits. The goal is a level surface, with the work explained in plain terms.

Problem signs
What Are the Signs You May Need Concrete Leveling in Wilmington?
- Uneven Concrete SlabsAn uneven concrete slab has dropped, tilted, or shifted out of its original plane because the soil supporting it changed.
- Tripping HazardsA tripping hazard from concrete is a spot where one section of flatwork has shifted out of plane with the next, leaving a raised or dropped edge a foot can catch on.
- Broken SidewalkA broken sidewalk is a walkway whose panels have cracked, dropped, tilted, or lifted because the ground beneath them changed.
- Cracked Garage FloorA cracked garage floor is a slab that has fractured because the soil supporting it changed, the slab moved, or the concrete shrank as it cured.
- Cracked ConcreteCracked concrete shows up on the surfaces you walk and park on every day: a thin line across a garage floor, a crack splitting a driveway or sidewalk panel, a patio or porch slab breaking near a joint, or a hairline telegraphing through tile over an interior slab.
